Tony and Pat Scott, from Colwyn Bay, set off on their boat Kind of Blue on June 17, and have fended off storms and high winds, and other man-made obstacles, to travel to Cephalonia, off Greece, where they were moored on Monday (Sept 17).
During their encounters from Capri through Italy and on to the Greek Islands over the last three weeks, they have experienced the delights of using a washing machine for the first time in weeks, told to stay from a military ship and discovered the costs of moorings on their way.
On their blogsite of the journey – on
www.turkeyblue.com – they said, for day 84 on September 10, when they sailed along the Italian coast, “We had some real problems anchoring one night in a storm. Our anchor dragged and we were on our way quickly out to sea before we recovered the situation.
“Another night we were again anchored in a storm and the Italians came and moored much too close, within 10 metres. We were close to hitting another boat all night, it was a real nightmare.”
They added: “The cost of marina berths in Italy can be as low as £20 but as high as £90 for 1 night it is prohibitive when you are sailing for months at a time!! Our Phones have been blocked too, they want us to buy Ital fones!! so we can only use text.”
They then left for Cephalonia on Day 92 and arrived at the island on Monday. They said: “Hooray! We're in Greece! Arrived in Cephalonia in the picturesque Port of Fiskardhon. There are 19th century houses amid green pinegroves. The only place not destroyed by earthquake in 1953.
“We sailed non stop for 37 hrs. We had a ceremony to hoist Greek flag.”
They are expected to reach Turkey around next Tuesday or Wednesday depending on the weather.
