DIDIM’S mayor - accused of accepting a 15,000 TL bribe from the landowner of Golden Beach Complex - was freed from a ‘corruption probe’ last night due to a lack of evidence.
The saga surrounding Golden Beach Complex, at Imbat, took a dramatic turn yesterday (Tues Nov 3) when it threatened to topple Mayor Mumin Kamaci, the town’s former planning chief Deniz Karakiş and Golden Beach Complex landowner Ahmet Akyel.
The enquiry was launched when Tahsin Abali, a partner of Didim Design Group which built Golden Beach Complex, lodged a criminal complaint claiming that Akyel had paid 15,000 TL into Kamaci’s personal bank account.
It was alleged by Abali that the payment was a ‘bribe’ to allow Akyel to construct Golden Beach Villas, a project which stands next door to Golden Beach Complex, without the necessary planning permits.
Didim’s public prosecutor launched an investigation and established that 15,000 TL had been paid by Akyel into Kamaci’s account. At 7am yesterday (Tues Nov 3), Gendarme officials took ex-planning officer Karakiş, who was responsible for issuing planning permits in 2005 at the time the Golden Beach Villas were built, to Didim Court to be questioned by the public prosecutor. The prosecutor also invited the mayor to attend the court at 10am as well as Akyel, who was represented in his absence by his attorney Cihan Aslan. After a nine-hour grilling, in which Kamaci accepted he had received a 15,000 TL payment from Akyel, but that it was for a food and bar bill at one of Kamaci’s restaurants, the public prosecutor released him and the others without charge due to lack of evidence.
At 7pm, on the steps of Didim Court and in front of 100 of the mayor’s supporters, Kamaci’s solicitor Nesrin Sandalci said: “Today it was proved that Kamaci’s history is 100 per cent clean. He has no dirty background.”

As Kamaci left the building, his supporters cheered and applauded him.
The Golden Beach Complex is presently gripped by a series of legal battles featuring British investors, Didim Design Group, DDG’s partners, including Abali, and landowner Akyel.
