Curtain to rise on new cinema
Posted on Friday, March 23 @ 22:56:50 CDT by editor

A NEW 1.5 MILLION YTL (£550,000) three-screen cinema is set to reel in thousands of movie-goers from in and around Didim, we can exclusively reveal.

The development will accommodate two cinemas with a capacity for 150 people each, and a third cinema for a 100-strong audience.

The complex, which will include a retail zone of six shops and a cafeteria, is being built at the rear of the Opet Petrol station on the Didim to Akbuk road. It lies less than five minutes’ car journey from the Didim Municipality building.

Builder Mehmut Gokdemir, Muhtar of Altinkum’s Camlik district for the last three years, said the cinema complex would target the British market with a number of films in their original English format.

The cinema is another added boost to the the rise of Didim as a major force in the tourism sector – particularly with the development of the marina near the Parliamentary sitesi which is due for completion in summer 2009.

The complex is set to be finished by next February/March, with the first film screenings due for about May.

Mr Gokdemir, who is owner of housing complexes at Third Beach and the Opet filling station, said the cinema project had been borne from repeated requests from British and Turkish residents wanting to watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

He added: “It was my desire to finish the building by June or July of this year, but the cost of the project was more than we expected. We are now scheduled to finish by next March and plan to open in May.”

The addition of a cinema is expected to be widely welcomed as the nearest cinemas are more than hour away in Izmir or Bodrum,

Mr Gokdemir added: “I was given the idea by numerous British people who asked for a cinema, or some kind of leisure facility.

“We plan to target British audiences with high quality films, but we will definitely embrace the Turkish market as there is a real need for such a complex in Didim. There is a big market which we will plan to fill.”

He said he hoped to clinch a deal with film distributors later in the year.
