 An inquiry into football corruption in England’s Premier League has been extended by two months to investigate 39 transfers.

Lord Stevens, the former commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, examined 362 transfers which took place between 1 January 2004 and 31 January 2006.

: Woods Homes in on Record
 
World number one Tiger Woods has issued an ominous warning to his rivals after setting yet another new record.

 
After becoming the first player to win at least eight times on the PGA Tour in three different seasons (1999, 2000 and 2006), he says he is still improving.

"I can control the ball better, I am hitting the ball further and I want to improve," said the 30-year-old American.

Woods also said that his performances this year vindicated the swing changes he made after his brilliant 2000 season when he won three majors and nine times overall.

 Andrew Flintoff has been named as England's captain for the Ashes tour of Australia.

Flintoff has been preferred to Andrew Strauss even though he has not played since undergoing ankle surgery in July. Ashley Giles and James Anderson have also been selected for the series in Australia

Giles has to bowl a ball in anger this year because of a hip problem while Anderson has been suffering from a stress fracture in his back.

Speaking ahead of their match with Werder Bremen, Mourinho said: "We want to win it - but so do all the others.

"When you speak about the players Chelsea bought, I think it's correct to say Chelsea should be stronger and should be contenders.

 Former Celtic defender Didier Agathe has signed a short-term deal with Aston Villa. The 31-year-old was offered terms last week after impressing during a trial spell with the club.

Agathe has now signed on with Martin O'Neill - who knows him well from their five years together at Celtic.

"He's not just here to make up the numbers. He's here because I think he has the talent and the hunger to get into our side and do a good job for us," said O'Neill.

  World champion Fernando Alonso has heavily criticised Michael Schumacher after the German retired from Formula One.

He said: "Michael is the most unsporting driver with the largest number of sanctions in the history of Formula One. That doesn't take away from the fact that he has been the best driver.

 Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy claims he was “stabbed in the back” by Sir Alex when he was dropped for the Carling Cup final.


Van Nistelrooy, aged 30, left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in July after scoring 150 goals in five seasons.

Swede Eriksson's five-year reign ended after this summer's World Cup, when he stepped down after guiding England to the quarterfinals.

 Newcastle United have agreed a shock loan swoop for Manchester United's young striker Giuseppe Rossi.

The Italian youth international is highly-rated at Old Trafford and had been expected to make an impact on the United first team during the coming campaign after the sale of Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid.


Indeed, Ferguson refused to allow the American-born Rossi to move to West Bromwich Albion as part of the deal that saw Tomasz Kuszczak join The Red Devils.
