Update

THIRD Beach could be sensitively redeveloped with homes and businesses reflecting its former Greek past.

News has emerged that Didim Council wants to re-invigorate the bay area between Didim Beach Hotel and the Didim Marina.

This is the vision of what the ‘development’ could look like. Mevcut Konut (existing housing) is thought to refer to the existing Penguin Restaurant building.

The project seeks to have a longer beach area and to build residences and commercial units in keeping with a former Greek fishing village/settlement which was known to be in the region before it was evacuated after the War of Independence.

Didim Municipality said the plans are still being prepared and will not affect normal tourism business this summer.

According to the project, the aim is to preserve the characteristics of Didim’s past and the architectural outlook of the period.

Any construction will be strictly overseen and will have to be “in accordance with the local civil architecture”. These envisage stone wall coverings with the use of local stone material, the use of a whitewash and garden walls as stone walls”.

Further details as the project develops will be reported on as and when Voices receives more information.
