Swimmers of the Ege Yükselen Yüzme Kulübü have left their mark on the Turkey Championships in Kaysari.
Maya Gördüemel, Mira Zeynep Dedeman, and Sura Deniz Kuşlar successfully competed at the three-day competition which brought together around 600 of the top swimmers aged 10, 11, and 12 from across the country. In total, over 4,000 young athletes competed simultaneously across five different regions, with each swimmer allowed a maximum of four events.
For Sura Deniz Kuşlar, this was her first experience competing at a national level, representing Didim in two races. She swam with heart and determination, making her club and hometown proud.
Mira Zeynep Dedeman and Maya Gördüemel each competed in four events and delivered exceptional performances. Mira achieved a remarkable 4th place in the 50m backstroke and earned qualification for the prestigious Champions League in Trabzon in the 50m freestyle.
Maya was also placed in the top 5 in all her races, securing qualifications for an impressive eight events in the upcoming Trabzon Championships. She now has the luxury of selecting her top four races to compete in.
Maya also debuted in the 200m medley at this level, stunning both officials and spectators by winning her heat and placing 4th overall.
Her most outstanding moment came in the 50m freestyle, where she smashed her personal best by 1.9 seconds, placing her within the Top 10 in Turkey, an incredible feat for an 11-year-old.
As Maya and Mira now prepare to face the nation’s elite swimmers and most professional clubs, the hard work truly begins. It’s time for the community of Didim to rally behind these extraordinary young athletes.
They are proving to the nation that with talent, dedication, and belief, champions can rise from small towns, such as Didim, even on limited resources.
Maya’s ultimate dream is to inspire more children to take up swimming and to show that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible, said her mum Samantha.
