It was reported that there was a significant decrease in the number of tourists visiting not only seaside tourist towns but also ancient cities, such as Priene Ancient City and the St. Nicholas Church, in the Güllübahçe Neighborhood.
Güllübahçe Neighborhood Headman Yusuf Çam, stated that Güllübahçe is in an important position in terms of tourism.
Muhtar Çam added: “The area we’re in is a tourist ring. This ring is on the old Doğanbey, Karina Lagoon, Balat, and Didim route. For this reason, tourists prefer to use the Güllübahçe route.
“Compared to last year, there’s been a significant decrease in both vehicle density and tourist numbers. Güllübahçe, with both the Church of St. Nicholas and the ancient city of Priene, is one of the first places tourists visit in the region.
“St. Nicholas Church is no longer accepting visitors due to renovations. The church’s doors have been locked. The closure of St. Nicholas Church to visitors is undoubtedly affecting tourist numbers.”
He added: “Furthermore, there’s been a significant decrease in the number of visitors to Priene. Reaching Priene requires a bit of a walk, a climb. With the summer heat, the number of tourists has dropped significantly. Priene’s visitor numbers generally increase in the spring, fall, and winter months.
“The lack of tourism has also affected Güllübahçe. Doğanbey isn’t as busy as it used to be, and businesses are struggling.”
