Here, we explore their excursion to Çanakkale. If you’re looking for a blend of fascinating history, stunning landscapes, and charming streets, Çanakkale should be at the top of your Turkish travel list. Steeped in legend and brimming with culture, this unique city on the Dardanelles offers something for everyone.
Step into the World of Troy
One of the most iconic sights in Çanakkale is the Trojan Horse, famously featured in the 2004 film Troy, starring Brad Pitt. While not the original wooden horse of ancient legend, it’s a fantastic photo opportunity and a perfect starting point for exploring the area’s rich historical narrative.
Wander the Streets of the Past
Take a stroll through Çanakkale’s charming cobblestone streets, lined with traditional Ottoman-style houses. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the city’s blend of ancient and modern vibes. Visit Çimenlik Fortress, a historic military stronghold with a Military Museum and Naval Museum that tell the story of this strategic region through the ages.
For those intrigued by archaeology, Çanakkale Archaeology Museum is a must-see. It showcases artifacts that span from the Trojan era to the Ottoman period, offering a deeper look into the region’s importance in world history.
Gallipoli Peninsula: A Day of Reflection
Just across the Dardanelles lies the Gallipoli Peninsula, home to the haunting and moving battlefields of World War I. This site, where thousands of British and Commonwealth and Turkish soldiers lost their lives, is an essential visit.
Ancient Troy
South of the city, step back into mythological history with a visit to the ancient ruins of Troy. Walk along the remnants of its famous city walls, and immerse yourself in the legends of the Trojan War that have captivated imaginations for centuries. In mythology, Achilles was a hero of the Trojan War and known as being the greatest of all the Greek warriors.
Tastes of Çanakkale
With the Dardanelles on its doorstep, no trip to Çanakkale is complete without indulging in its renowned, if exceptional fish and seafood dishes. Whether you’re enjoying grilled fish or sampling local specialties at one of the many charming eateries, the flavours will impress.
For those with a sweet tooth, try Çanakkale Peynir Helvası, a unique hot dessert made from cheese and halva. This deliciously comforting treat offers a true taste of Çanakkale’s cultural heritage.
Çanakkale is an experience that will stay long after you leave. With its rich history, welcoming locals and stunning scenery, this charming destination is just waiting to be explored.
Go2altinkum’s Excursion
Day 1: Arrival and Leisurely Exploration
Your journey begins with a smooth, comfortable VIP transfer from Didim to Çanakkale. We’ll arrive around lunchtime, where you’ll be dropped off at the Grand ANZAC Hotel, on the Anatolian side of the Çanakkale Strait. After settling in, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city at your own pace. Take a stroll to the famous Trojan Horse replica used in the blockbuster film Troy and then gifted to the people of Çanakkale. You can also wander through the Aynalı Çarşı (the Mirrored Bazaar), a charming labyrinth of cobbled streets filled with local shops and cafés. Unwind with a drink at one of the many waterside cafés overlooking the strait, before enjoying a delicious dinner back at the hotel.
Day 2: Gallipoli and the Depths of History
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll start the day with a visit to the Çanakkale Mausoleum, a tribute to those who lost their lives in the region’s many conflicts. You’ll then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, offering a taste of authentic Turkish cuisine.
In the afternoon, we head to the battlefields of Gallipoli. Here, you’ll walk the same ground where the ANZAC and Allied forces fought during World War I, witnessing the heart-wrenching memorials that commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of thousands of soldiers. The atmosphere is sombre and reflective, giving you a real sense of the scale and importance of the Gallipoli Campaign. Return to the hotel for a restful evening and another delightful dinner.
