What began 18 years ago as a light-hearted ladies’ get-together at the Hilltop (situated where the Box Bar is now), has blossomed into one of Didim’s most enduring social groups. Known as Chatty Chicks, the group later moved to the Tipsy Bar and now meets every Wednesday at 1 pm in Ali’s Bar.
The group’s original purpose was simple: a chance for women to enjoy each other’s company, away from the men. Over the years, however, it has grown into much more, bringing together English-speaking women from Didim, Akbük, and Yeşiltepe for friendship, community spirit, and charitable giving.
Membership has fluctuated between 20 and 50 over the years, though today’s smaller numbers mean members can connect more closely with everyone in the room. Newcomers are always welcome. Just turn up and join in.
Each week, members contribute through a small raffle, jumble sales, and modest subscriptions (5 TL for subs, 30 TL for the raffle, and 20 TL for the jumble). These little amounts add up: on a normal week, the group raises between 400 and 600 TL.
Proceeds are used to support both local and wider causes. From donating school equipment and supporting Help In Hands’ projects to presenting wheelchairs in partnership with the Disabled Association, the group is always ready to lend a hand.
They’ve even stepped in during national crises, such as the Hatay earthquake. Donations are considered carefully, usually guided by word of mouth.
Alongside the fundraising, there’s a strong social side too. Members bring along books, CDs, and DVDs to share, sometimes stay for lunch afterwards, and occasionally bring items to sell privately among the group members. The atmosphere is friendly and inclusive, and the motto is clear: the more the merrier.
For nearly two decades, the Chatty Chicks have combined laughter and camaraderie with a real commitment to helping others. And as they continue to meet each week, that spirit shows no sign of fading.
