SCORES of residents attended an impromptu meeting last week in Akbuk to question Didim Mayor Deniz Atabay on this summer’s water shortages.

Voices reported how many residents have complained of either being on rationed water supplies or have had none for several days over the last three weeks. It appears the problem hit peak over the Şeker Bayamı break but has continued to persist this week.

At the meeting, organized by Akbük Environment and Culture Association earlier this week, Mr Atatbay said he was keen to solve the water problems.

Having listened to residents’ problems about sewage and water shortages, Mr Atabay said the council was working on a strategic plan to tackle the issues at hand.

He said the problems may also lie with the fact that the authority now responsible for water was Aydin Metropolitan Council after the Akbuk authority ceased to exist.

“This year Akbuk has been most affected. It saddens me that progress has not been made on the water shortage issues,” he said. “The responsibility for water supply now lies with Aydin Municipality, but we are trying to resolve the current issues.”

He said that Akbuk, Didim and most of Turkey were experiencing drought conditions and the worst times were at holiday time.

He added that while staffing issues within Aydin were being addressed,  Akbuk, Didim and most of Turkey were experiencing drought conditions and the worst times were at holiday time.

He added: “The issue upsets me for all those in Akbuk, but we are working to resolve them and return the supplies to normal.”

Mr Atabay indicated that a 17-kilometre pipeline was to be built in Akbuk this autumn to alleviate the ongoing sewer problems in the area as well.
