Germans plea for Apollo road closure

GERMAN archaeology teams tasked with digs around the Apollo Temple have petitioned the Aydin ministry officials to finalise plans for the permanent closure to vehicles on the road through the Eskikoy area.

The road that runs close to the Temple in the Hisar district was closed initially but reopened to one-way traffic in March 2013.

However, the German Archaeological Institute has petitioned the Aydin governmental department for antiquities and monuments to permanently close the road to traffic.

A letter from the team stated that it had ‘serious concerns’ for the local environment and the personal safety of tourists and locals.

The matter has been referred to the Aydin Municipality and City Traffic Commissioner for a decision.
