THE council worker killed following the collapse of a balcony at a building on Altinkum sea front has been laid to rest today.

The dead man, married 33-year-old Levent Bakay, had just celebrated the birth of his third child.

It appears that he along with other council workers were buried under a collapsed balcony on a building behind Tansas supermarket on Thursday as part of the local council’s action on illegal builds on the sea front.

The injured are reported to have been named as Raşit Yıldırım, Müslüm Karabulut, Bahattin Tokmak, Ahmet Zengin and Hacı Darıcı.

Didim AKUT emergency rescue team, along with emergency services, responded to the incident and have all been praised for their actions by Didim Mayor Deniz Atabay.

Mr Atabay was among a number of council leaders who attended the funeral of Mr Bakay.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has ordered an official investigation into the incident.

Didim’s AKP party leader Cenk Unlu said“As we all know, this is an extremely sad day for Didim. A municipal employee lost his life and five employees were injured. Our thoughts are with all those concerned.”
