Didim News in Brief

No helmet riders face police fines

TRAFFIC police have launched a major crackdown on motorcyclists caught without protective helmets.

Officers have already caught and fined 65 rides within three days of the new campaign across Didim.

They were also targeting riders driving without licences and other traffic documents.

Traffic officers were also targeting drivers who skip red lights and other traffic offences, but the main aim seems to be those riding motorcycles without helmets.

Two teens nabbed for bag theft

TWO teenagers were given a grilling by police after they grabbed a woman’s handbag and fled.

The lads, aged 19 and 17, struck as the woman was walking in Sokak 1475 in the Efeler district  of Didim on Monday.

The woman shouted for help and residents alerted the police who quickly descended on the scene. While waiting for the police to arrive, the resident apprehended one of the teens, while the other was caught a short time later by officers.

Both were taken to court for questioning and the bag and its contents were recovered from bushes a short distance from the robbery. The boys admitted it was their first offence and were remanded pending further enquiries.

Hygiene training for hotel staff

FOOD, catering and cleaning staff at a number of hotels across Didim underwent environmental health training at a recent seminar hosted at the Club Tarhan Hotel.

A chemical engineer, food quality control technician and a food engineer were among the speakers advising staff on the importance of hygiene and pest control, as well as the need for strict cleanliness in kitchens.

Chemical engineer Özgür Karakas warned that unclean areas are a breeding ground for the growth of food micro-organisms, urging that businesses should be cleaned regularly and be disinfected.

He urged business and tourism facilities catering to tourism to set up a specific plan of action for daily cleaning and disinfection.

The kitchen department employees who participated were awarded certificates for their environmental health service knowledge at the conclusion of the seminar.

Palms and posters

IF Didim’s under threat palms weren’t already under attack from pesky beetles, they are now being used as adhoc advertising posts.

The council this week issued new warnings about the beetles that are apparently running rampant and destroying palms across the resort.

But a new threat has reared its head with businesses seeking to switch free advertising from lamposts to the palms trees themselves.

The council is understood to be looking into the situation for legality.
