Peace event confined to march

DUE to the present security detail in Turkey, a last minute decision was taken to scrap all traditional elements of the Peace Festival in favour for a simple march.

The September 1 festival, which is now in its 20th year, was hastily re-arranged with a simple walk to the Peace Flame, at Aytepe, where the torch was lit and speeches made by Mayor Deniz Atabay.

Doves were also released as a sign of peace.

Mr Atabay said: “Babies and children are dying all over the world due to war. All the people want is peace in their home and their countries. The Peace Flame is a reminder that peace and hope can never be extinguished.”

Hisar gets drainage action

DIDIM’S Hisar neighbourhood is finally getting action on complaints of sewage in the area and the stench that has prevailed over the summer.

Following the pollution and stench in Hisar, work has begun on a rainwater channel following the demands of residents.

The channel was disconnected with the first part of this study, then dead fish and garbage were collected in buckets, while the water was taken to the sewage truck.

The reclamation work started in 2012 after a tender in the year, 2013 has been completed. The total channel length of 1 kilometer with site and flash floods due to rain ended in the surrounding sites.

Aydin Water and Sewerage Administration (ASKI) and Didim District Directorate teams carried out the works this week to relieve the channel.
