EIGHT people were injured when a pier at a hotel collapsed early Saturday morning.

The injured were staying at the 5-star Caprice Deluxe Wellness and Spa Hotel, at Fevzipasa, between Akbuk and Didim, when the drama unfolded at 1am.

The wooden pier, on which many holidaymakers were located, collapsed for an undetermined reason.

Coast guard, police, fire brigade and 112 Emergency Service crews were dispatched to the area to rescue those affected.

The eight injured were rescued by the crews and other holidaymakers and removed to the Didim State Hospital by ambulances.

Two were detained in hospital for leg and arm injuries.

Didim District Police Department teams are investigating the incident.

District Governor Mehmet Turkoz stated that the necessary judicial inquiry was underway by the Didim Public Prosecutor’s Office. Türköz stated that it is an allegation that the pier skeleton is unlicensed. He said: “It is an old pier where the event took place. We will look into the matter.”

Didim Mayor Deniz Atabay stated the scaffold had been sealed to prevent its use several times since 2006.
