AN APPEAL to help children’s online learning experiences during the ongoing pandemic lockdown has produced a fantastic community response from different parts of the world.

Füsun and Mark Wadner, residents in Didim, were looking at ways to help local families who were no doubt struggling to support their children’s education now that it is online during the ongoing lockdown.

Füsun, a retired school teacher in Turkey, and Mark, decided to put in a request on a few local groups on Facebook to see if anyone had any older Android tablets they were no longer using.

“We know a lot of people upgrade and are often left with a redundant device just gathering dust,” said Mark, and was delighted when three Samsung tablets were kindly donated by a couple of British families.

All personal information was removed from them, and the tablets were upgraded and donated to 3 local families who they knew were unable to afford one. “These 3 tablets alone have helped 5 children with their coursework,” added Mark.

On reading of their request, their friend Colin Motion, based in the UK, but who has a holiday apartment in Didim, witht he backing of the couple, turned to his friends for donations to aid the campaign.

Within two weeks Mr Motion has raised over 8500TL. A majority of this money was raised from The Mayfair 2 residents of various nationalities where he has his summer apartment. The remainder was donated by his friends and co-workers.

“We would like to say a huge thank you for everyone’s generosity,” added the couple.

Having spoken with the mayor’s office and the IT manager, the couple confirmed what would be the most suitable tablet for children.

“We have now purchased 8 tablets – the Samsung Tab A 8 inch – plus the protective cases for them,” they added. “Seven have been donated through the Mayor’s office and one to another family. Again many thanks to all who contributed and helped children continue their education.”

Mayor Deniz Atabay said: “I would like to thank the couple for their sensitivity. Through their efforts, we will continue to protect and support our students and youth, who are the future of Didim.”
