Mask Implementation is on Germany’s Agenda Again

There is growing concern in Germany regarding the resurgence of colds, respiratory diseases, and the flu worldwide. Presently, approximately 7 million people in Germany are grappling with respiratory illnesses.

This situation has spurred discussions in Germany about reinstating mask mandates. While wearing masks is currently compulsory in certain hospitals, there are discussions about extending this requirement to all medical facilities.

Notably, both the Tübingen and Marburg University hospitals have made it mandatory for all patients and visitors to wear masks. Additionally, Marburg has implemented visitor restrictions as a precautionary measure.

However, there exists a divergence of opinions among experts concerning these restrictions and the efficacy of vaccines.

Professor Dr Hendrik Streeck, the Head of the Institute of Virology at the University of Bonn, has been a vocal critic of mask mandates since the beginning. Streeck believes that the current restrictions are overstated. He suggests that a short-term mask requirement in high-risk areas might be reasonable, but strongly opposes mask mandates and visitor restrictions throughout hospitals.

Experts are also advocating for vulnerable groups to receive COVID-19 vaccinations once more. Andreas Gassen, President of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Doctors, highlighted the low demand for vaccines.

He remarked, “Given the immense public pressure for COVID-19 vaccinations in the past, the current low demand might not be surprising. Many individuals are understandably fatigued by vaccinations. However, this poses a problem for vulnerable groups who need protection, especially against the flu.”

Dr. Markus Beier, President of the Family Physicians Association, emphasized the severity of COVID-19 for vulnerable groups without adequate vaccine protection. He drew parallels to the flu, stating, “Coronavirus remains a serious disease, particularly for vulnerable groups lacking proper vaccine coverage. The same holds true for the flu. During severe flu seasons, tens of thousands of individuals succumb to this illness.”

Gerald Gaß, President of the German Hospital Association, urged everyone within the STIKO recommendation criteria to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. He emphasized, “This is the best defence against severe illness and prevents hospitals from becoming overwhelmed.”
