A total of 60,000 sqm of land in Didim is now under protection after investigations uncovered many historical artifacts dating back to the Late Roman and Byzantine periods.

The Aydin Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Heritage have expanded the boundaries of the Eastern Tekağaç Farm Settlement Archaeological Site, placing approximately 60,000 square meters under historical protection.

According to the board’s decision, surface surveys conducted within the boundaries of Hisar and Efeler neighbourhoods revealed findings of significance. In addition to remnants of walls constructed with rubble stones, fragments of terracotta ceramics believed to date back to the Late Roman and Byzantine periods were unearthed in the area.

With the new regulation, the area of the archaeological site has reached 59,754 square meters, while the perimeter of the protected area has been determined as 978 meters.

As part of the decision, the land registry records of parcels 12 and 13 in block 1676 in Efeler Neighborhood and parcel 252 in block 1628 in Hisar Neighborhood will be updated with the annotation “Located Within an Archaeological Site”.

Following the protection decision, it became mandatory to prepare a conservation-oriented zoning plan in the region in accordance with the current legislation. This will ensure the area containing historical remains is passed on to future generations and that construction processes are kept under control.
