Uçhisar Castle
For some of the best panoramic views, head to Uçhisar. The natural rock citadel rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape, with the honeycombed rock face revealing just how extensively Cappadocians once used the natural formations as homes and places of refuge. From the higher viewpoints, look across a landscape filled with valleys, fairy chimneys and distant mountains. It’s a view that deserves a little time to take in.
Go underground!
There are also extraordinary underground cities, such as Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, which form part of the UNESCO-listed Cappadocian heritage area. These subterranean settlements extend through multiple levels beneath the surface, with passages, rooms and spaces that reveal how communities once lived and sought protection.
Valleys, fairy chimneys and spectacular scenery
Cappadocia is a paradise for anyone who loves beautiful scenery. Although eventually abandoned, walking today through Zelve gives visitors a fascinating sense of what life must once have been like.
Avanos: art, pottery and the Red River
The town of Avanos, beside Kızılırmak, Türkiye’s longest river, is famous for its traditional pottery. Pottery has been part of life here for generations, with local artisans using the region’s distinctive clay to create everything from traditional pieces to contemporary designs. It makes a lovely contrast to the dramatic landscapes and ancient sites, and perhaps the perfect place to find something unusual to take home.
And, of course, those famous balloons…
Mention Cappadocia and many people immediately picture one thing: hundreds of hot-air balloons floating above the fairy chimneys at sunrise.
