Fireworks and silence 50 days on….

The death of Eden Skeete has obviously faded quicker than the average firework hitting the night sky.

But for some it is a case of business as usual. The council, in the wake of Eden’s death banned fire shows and entertainment with explosives – ie fireworks.

 New generation kicks on

The formation of the first British and Turkish team of youngsters is the perfect demonstration of how far the two communities have come in the last two years.

Football might be ‘a funny old game’ with its controversies at the top level, but it is still the only common sport for children that breaks down barriers, overcomes language problems and does not differentiate between sex, race, creed, skill or colour.

 Property Boom to Continue?

So Minister of Culture and Tourism Atilla Koç has set Turkey’s stall out for the next five years and that his ‘crystal ballgazing’ will lead to an upsurge in foreign ownership of homes.

This is obviously welcome news to a country that has made fantastic strides in recent years to stabilise its economy and present itself to the world, or Europe at least, to be one of the most warm and welcoming countries for tourists.

A Step in The Right Direction?

The shock at the death of little Eden Galvani-Skeete sent shockwaves around the world and Didim was exposed to the full glare of the media spotlight.

The council has acted responsibly and positively by banning all other fire shows in the district. That is the minimum of what anyone would want.

But a more interesting question now arises. What now for entertainment in Didim? Banning fire shows is just the start but a bigger effort now needs to be put in place to show the resort for what it is.

Entertainment or a Disaster Waiting to Happen?

DISASTER….How many times have our parents told us, and indeed when we become mums and dads have we told our children, not to play with fire.

More so when an entertainer uses flames at the core of his act do we place the safety of ourselves, and that of our children, literally in their hands. If anything we expect it.

Best example of friendship and solidarity

John Key, whose illness has afflicted us all deeply, is back with us following his operation last week.

David Hill, Güven Serçe and Sinan Akbalaban organised a charity night for John in Joker’s Club in Akbük. These fellows, who kept the night as a secret from John until the last day, made a strictly professional job. We witnessed one of the best examples of friendship and solidarity that night. The sight of banners of “Everything is for John” unfurling accompanied by songs, Turkish – British flags streaming and the heartfelt attitudes of the people there were worth seeing.
