Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki, speaking after an event in Edirne, highlighted Turkey’s vulnerability to earthquakes.

He emphasized the need for both citizens and the government to take precautions.

Explaining that precautions should first start from the building where everyone lives, Moriwaki stated that the floor of the building is of great importance in earthquakes.

He said, “Does the building you live in have a license or occupancy permit or not, is it a building built under control? All of these should be checked. Is it a building built before 2000 or a building built after?

He advised: “It is necessary to create a “Triangle of Life”. You need to secure your belongings and determine where the family will meet after the earthquake. In this way, you should all be ready together.

“An earthquake bag must be prepared and there must be water, whistle, flashlight and chocolate in the bag.”

Moriwaki cautioned specific areas in Izmir like Karşıyaka due to old buildings and soft ground. For Istanbul, he urged swift reinforcement starting from vulnerable regions.
